Structural Moving > FAQ > Answer 1b

What does it cost to move a house?

Basements factor in.

Some houses are built right on concrete slabs. I understand this is more common down south. Housemovers in those areas have developed methods to move the house with the slab and all.

Other houses have a foundation on which the house rests. If the dirt is excavated out down to the top of the footing, its generally considered to be a full basement. The footing in this case is at least seven or more feet from the bottom of the house. If the dirt is a few feet (approximately three or less) from the bottom of the house, its a crawl space.

A "Michigan basement" consists of a house where the basement has been dug out from no basement. Some of the dirt is left since the foundation is sitting on it.

It is cheaper to move a house off of a full basement. If there isn't a full basement, dirt has to be excavated by hand or other means to get the beams under the house.
